Why would you make a good mentor?I have been in the archives field for several years. During that time, I have learned so much and grown as an archivist. Most of my growth and knowledge can be attributed to learning from others. Through webinars, workshops, presentations, networking, and co-workers, I have been able to advance my career and be a better archivist.
I currently work as the Music & Popular Culture Archivist at GSU. This work has given me many opportunities and has helped me to grow in my career. Before this role, I worked as a processing archivist at the Atlanta University Center. Through my roles, I have been able to gain many skills. I am proficient with collection management systems, such as ArchivesSpace. I have experience processing collections and creating finding aids. I have experience with donors, acquisitions, appraisal, collection development, preservation, assessment, digital archives, exhibits, oral histories, and instruction. I have experience with digital humanities, specifically geographic information systems and historical maps. Additionally, I work with a variety of material types: audiovisual, manuscript, and born-digital.
During my career, I have held several leadership roles in both the Society of Georgia Archivists and the Society of American Archivists. Additionally, I served as the chair of the ArchivesSpace User Advisory Council and currently work as an ArchivesSpace trainer. I feel that my positions and experience give me great perspectives on the archives profession. I would like to be able to give back and offer any advice I can to others needing help.
What is the best piece of professional advice you received?
The best piece of professional advice I ever receive was to network: meet other archivists and learn from them.
