The Society of Georgia Archivists’ Education Committee is pleased to present a Religious Archives Workshop on Tuesday, November 13th, from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, at the Breman Museum in Atlanta. Created through a partnership between individuals from the Pitts Theology Library at Emory University, the William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta, and the American Baptist Historical Society, this workshop will serve as an “Archives 101” for religious populations around Georgia.

The mission for all four institutions focuses on preserving the history of religious populations in Georgia. A part of this work involves working closely with congregations/parishes to preserve their records. Congregational/parish staff and volunteers from religious communities in Georgia are encouraged to attend this day-long training workshop where basic archival and record-keeping skills will be taught by archivists or records managers from these organizations.

Sessions for the workshop will cover:

  • Records Management and Archival Appraisal
  • Preservation of Materials
  • Arrangement and Description
  • Outreach and Access
  • Panel Q&A

The workshop’s goal is to create an awareness of thoughtful preservation of the religious communities’ resources. As a one-day workshop, each session can only cover basic principles and so we hope to provide additional resources for attendees to dig deeper into various topics.

Instructors will be Brandon Wason, Ph.D., Curator of Archives and Manuscripts, Pitts Theology Library at Emory University; Jeremy Katz, C.A., Director of the Cuba Family Archives for Southern Jewish History at the William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum; Angelique Richardson, C.A., Director of the Office of Archives and Records, Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta; and Jill Sweetapple, Archivist, American Baptist Historical Society.

Thank you to our sponsors, Preserve South and Hollinger Metal Edge.

Registration ends Friday, November 9th.
