This one-day workshop will provide participants with an overview of how the law, state and federal, in its various forms, impacts archival functions, including access, acquisitions, reproductions, etc. Topics to be covered include contract law, privacy law, and intellectual property law, which includes a discussion of copyright. All levels of law will be covered, but special attention will be paid to Georgia laws and court cases. The focus of this workshop will be on how archivists can think about, understand, express, and deal with potential legal issues as they relate to their roles as archivists. Participants will discuss, evaluate, and consider how various legal issues presented in this workshop impact their archives and archival work. Through case studies, participants will engage with these concepts in specific situations that pertain to the work of archivists. Participants are encouraged to bring their institutions’ existing policy documents and forms for discussion and review during the workshop.

Who Should Attend: Archivists and others who need an understanding of the special circumstances of how law impacts archives.
