2008 Workshops

Fundamentals of Audiovisual Preservation

Friday, May 30, 2008
9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.
University of Georgia

Do you have mysterious and unidentified audiovisual materials lurking in your collections? Do you know the proper methods for care and handling of these items? Join us for an action-packed workshop that will give you the tools necessary to articulate the preservation needs of your a/v collections, to understand time and budget commitments necessary to manage a/v resources, and to reference recommended sources for standards, methods, and equipment.

The workshop will discuss format identification, digitization standards, physical preservation of media (with a focus on the types of deterioration affecting magnetic tape and film), preservation storage, methods of labeling media and storage containers (from CDs and DVDs to cassette cases and film cans), safety (handling media and protecting your health), playback and transfer (the analogue-to-digital and digital-to-digital environment), equipment needs (making preservation and access happen on a budget), and genre- or subject-specific topics (e.g., home movies, oral histories, copyrighted media, automated transfer systems).

Participants: The workshop is intended for professionals who must maintain and care for audiovisual materials in their collections.

Instructors: Ruta Abolins, Director of the Media Archives & Peabody Awards Collection, UGA; Craig Breadon, Head of Media and Oral History, Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies, UGA; and Margie Compton, Archivist, Media Archives, UGA

Applying DACS to Single-Item Manuscript Cataloging

May 13, 2008
Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center

Single items possess great subject interest or notable authors. For the archivist, however, they are too often confusing, time-consuming, and challenging to identify and describe. How do you add to an artificial collection? Subject file? MARC 21 record? How do you write a DACS-compliant MARC record for a diary, anyway? In this workshop you’ll acquire the practical know-how that’ll result in time savings!

May 13 - early-bird discount available through April 13

The Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center

SGA members qualify for a special $25 discount off the non member registration fee. As you register, enter SGAADA in to the promotional code space on the registration form and we'll process your discount manually.
