Exhibition" features the Civil War photographic collection of David
Wynn Vaughan, a long time collector and expert in photography of the
period. "Portraits in Gray" is a unique multi-themed gallery which
attempts to humanize the Southern soldiers of the conflict (and by
extension Union soldiers as well) by presenting the original images of
the soldiers in a greatly enlarged and crystal clear framed format. The
humanizing aspect of the gallery is presented in three sections entitled
"Citizen Soldiers", "Brothers in Arms" and "Youth at War".
The gallery also touches upon the importance of the images from the
conflict for all interpreters and students. These images often serve as
evidence of what the written records only touch upon or can not fully
explain with words or narrative. This important topic is addressed in
three distinct sections; "Georgia Military Institute", "Snapshots
in Time" and Bowie Knives & Muskets". Finally, the third theme of
the gallery addresses the topic of the photography and important
photographers of the era. A view behind the lens, as it was during that
time period.
