- Where: Athens-Clarke County Library in the auditorium
- Description: Second in the series "Community Dialog About
Race," this one features Dr. Douglas Bachtel, Professor of Housing and
Consumer Economics. His expertise in statistics and demographics is most
widely known through his work as editor of The Georgia County Guide, The
Georgia Municipal Guide, and The Georgia Housing Guide. He
will give us an overview of what our community is like today and what we used
to be like. From the first discussion that focused on Brown v Board of
Education, we learned that people feel that we have lost a sense of community.
This began when the schools were changed from neighborhood schools that seemed
to provide a focal point for communities. Once Dr. Bachtel helps us understand
our community as it is today, since schools as a community focal point are no
longer a reality, are there actions we can take to regain some of that sense
of community? Facilitator will be Dr. Keith Parker, Associate Provost from the
University of Georgia's Office of Institutional Diversity.

- Description: In conjunction with the Savannah City Hall Centennial, 1906-2006,
on August 11th the Library & Archives initiated a series of weekly historical
articles on the the web, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the elaborate 1904 public ceremony for the building's cornerstone laying.
Entitled "A Building for A Century to Come: The Birth of City Hall, 1903-1906," these articles examine topics such as:
- open space and preservation concerns related to the Bay Street site and the former City
Exchange
- early-20th-Century excitement about the advent of the "Greater Savannah;"
- several interesting anecdotes of Savannah's Black History;
- considerations, controversies, contracts, costs, and quirks along the way, as the construction progressed;
and,
- City Hall's gala opening receptions attended by 10,000 citizens.
Some articles are accompanied by images of historical photographs, documents, or artifacts. They are researched and written for the City
by Luciana M. Spracher, principal of Bricks & Bones Historical Research,
utilizing resources of the Georgia Historical Society, the Live Oak Public Libraries, the Savannah State University Library, and the Digital
Library of Georgia; microfilm backfiles of the Savannah Morning News, Savannah
Evening Press, and Savannah Tribune newspapers; and, the City's own archival public records. The articles are available via a link from

archive dates from February 18, 1903, and will continue into calendar years 2005 and 2006 with history
