"ARCHIVAL DIPLOMACY: DONOR RELATIONS"Coastal Georgia Center, Savannah, GA A Pre Conference to the 34th Annual Meeting of the Society of Georgia Archivists Good donor relations are vital to institutions that are involved in actively identifying and accessioning archival collections. Negotiating with donors for collections requires diplomacy and skills not generally taught in graduate programs or library schools. This half-day workshop will take participants through the process of identifying donors, making the initial approach, and tips for negotiating for the transfer of collections. It will also focus on the appropriateness of prospective donations for institutions, the importance of clear title, and legal and ethical concerns. Attention will be paid to logistical issues such as receipts and deeds of gift, initial inventories, preservation concerns, and the transportation of collections to the receiving institution. Strategies for developing and cultivating on-going relations with donors will be emphasized. Participants: The workshop is intended for librarians and archivists who are involved in the acquisition of archival collections. Instructor: Alfred E. Lemmon currently is Curator of Manuscripts and Director of the Williams Research Center of The Historic New Orleans Collection. He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Society of American Archivists (SAA), Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA), Society of Southwest Archivists (SSA), and Music Library Association (MLA). He has served as Chair of the Steering Committee for the Acquisitions and Appraisal Section of the SAA. He has overseen the processing of several large manuscript collections, such as the 56,000-item William Russell Jazz Collection, and has also worked on the acquisition of several large collections of manuscript material.
