2002 Annual Meeting NewsAnnual Meeting Home2003 OfficersAs reported by Susan Broome, 2001 SGA President, at the Business Meeting held in Decatur, Georgia, on November 14, 2002:
Auction ResultsWell, Ladies and Gentlemen, it has oft been said that anything done more than once is a fine tradition, and done more than twice is a deep and lasting legacy. That should put us within about a year's reach of legacy status with the SGA Scholarship auctions. Held within the distinguished precincts of the old DeKalb County Court Chamber, the 2002 SGA Auction was a pool of acquisitional delight, as bidders vied for the right to enrich the Society's scholarship coffers and in the process become the proud new owners of such arcane delights as the triumphal return (and cloning) of the Hustle and Bump twins or the storied mysteries behind the enigmatic smile of Twinkie the Kid. But let's cut to the chase, yes? This year's 40 selections of provender netted just shy of $700.00, an amount sweetened by unknown benefactors to a somewhat more regal $800.00. This was the result of the earnest bidding warfare of 42 frenzied bidders (a somewhat more modest turnout than the 63 hardy bidders last year in Macon). Though we raised $1000.00 last year on the sale of 38 items, it should be remembered that last year's totals were augmented by donation boxes on tables and those noble unknown benefactors. Long and short of it, though, it appears that we did good enough work to tentatively commit to traveling to Savannah in 2003 (if we can put the same pit crew together; the winning formula should not be tinkered with......). As before, many helpful hands and hearts to thank. To Linda Davis, thanks for coordinating our effort with the planning committee, and to Frances Overcash, many thanks for arranging on-site logistics and facilitating the staging areas we used for the auction. Again, the generosity of donors has made this all possible. Thanks to our friends at Metal Edge, the Georgia Historical Society, Jim Payne and our friends at Big City Bread in Athens, our hosts at the DeKalb County Historical Society, Myron House (for The King and Herb and assorted delights), Chuck Barber and Jill Severn (for the Paleolithic artifacts and fine art prints), Susan Broome (for the embroidery), Valerie Frey, she of the Chamber of Baked Delights, Laura Botts (for Twinkie the Kid [the Official Snack Carrier of the Society of Georgia Archivists], and for other wondrous things like 'Mini Me'), and to Linda Davis, "Mom" of the SGA Sock Monkey Consort, thanks for keeping our simian expectations high..... To our bidders, including winners Kayla Barrett, Laura Botts, Susan Broome, Laura Carter, Alice Taylor Colbert, Linda Davis, Susan Dick, Myron House, Lance Jones, Sheila McAlister, Mary McKay, Kaye Minchew, Adela Moore, Andy Phydras, Jill Severn, David Stanhope, Ken Thomas, Winston Walker, Susan Weber, and to the rest of you who did your part by helping to drive the bidding up, again, thank you. Finally, the gang in the pits. Everyone who helped in whatever way can take credit for their part, but especial thanks go out to Sheila McAlister for essaying the thankless chore of Registrar, and to the Master of the Lists and Major Domo Extraordinaire, Chuck Barber, thanks for agreeing to babysit the assemblage, and for keeping those amazin' items coming. I couldn't have done it without you..... Perhaps when we assemble again in Savannah, with fresh treasures to redistribute, the next chapter of the legacy might begin. Until that time, I am, and hope to remain, On Behalf of the SGA Scholarship Committee,
