Reason(s) for wanting to be a mentor:
I firmly believe mentoring plays an important role in professional development. It offers an opportunity not only for networking, but also for a type of focused guidance not offered in workshops, webinars, or conferences. As my career has developed over the past 15 years, Lee Eltzroth, Michael Rose, Pam Hackbart-Dean and others have served as exemplary mentors. Now, I desire to give back to the profession in a formal program, though mentoring has played an important part in the internship programs I have coordinated.
Is there any other information about your career or yourself that you would like to share with potential mentees:
My background in archives is diverse - public research library, university, historical society, grant-funded positions, as is my academic background - M.A. in women's studies and a Ph.D. in American studies. I have taught archival theory and practice courses in the Public History Program at the University of West Georgia and served on the curriculum development team for the Master of Archival Studies program at Clayton State University. Also, I am an active member of the Society of American Archivists, the Academy of Certified Archivists, and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference.
As a mentor, I see myself as:
I want to help a mentee:
- Feel more a part of or connected to the professional community and SGA
- By providing advice related to building and navigating professional relationships (with supervisors, direct reports, co-workers, peers, etc.)
- By providing assistance with a specific goal (such as a project, publication, presentation, grant submission, etc.)
